SPARTANS UPSET BY PIRATES IN AMC BATTLE

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Two players recorded over 20 points for the Park University men's basketball team on Saturday in a surprising 75-67 upset of Missouri Baptist University.

Missouri Baptist went into the game looking to hold on to a share of second place in the American Midwest Conference, but thanks to a disciplined Park team, were kept away from the free throw stripe. Missouri Baptist committed 21 fouls to the Pirates' eight, which proved to be the difference.

Park's Justin Hariston and Melvin Gatson became the go-to guys for the Pirate offense. Both players recorded 21 points while Hairston added 10 rebounds to notch his first double-double of the season.

After heading into halftime up by five, the Spartans looked sluggish in the second half. The Pirates took advantage of the cold Missouri Baptist team, shooting 58% in the second half as opposed to MBU's 40% from the floor.

Missouri Baptist gave up the five-point advantage just two minutes into the second half, thanks to a bucket in the paint by Michael Anorue to give his team a one-point lead. Though the Spartans didn't go away, Park continued to grow its lead heading into the final minutes.

Missouri Baptist's Le Andre Johnson led the team throughout the game, especially in the second half. The junior posted 21 points and was 9-12 from the floor for the game. Johnson and Dezmon Hickman were the only two to finish in double digits for the Spartans.

Missouri Baptist will head into its second game of a four-game home stand on Thursday against a struggling William Woods team. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
