ST. LOUIS, Mo.- After nearly beating #8 ranked Columbia College, the Missouri Baptist men's soccer team ran into Lyon College who has received votes in the NAIA poll. The Spartans battled, but Lyon scored late in the first half for the 1-0 victory.
It was a slow start between the two teams, as the only shots in the first 15:00 minutes were a blocked shot by Lyon and a save by MBU goalie Ethan Brunk. The game started to become very fast paced, with each team starting to find their groove offensively after the mid-way point in the first half.
Just before the half with less thirty seconds to go, Lyon was able to grab the 1-0 lead on a goal by Mauricio Bruciaga who scored after Brunk lost control of the ball in front of the net. At the half, the Spartans were outshot 8-3, with Brunk making four saves.
In the second half, the team was looking to pick up the pressure on the Lyon defense and gain some momentum. MBU, however, managed just four shots in the second half, as the Scots totaled 12 and were able to hold on for the victory.
Brunk did his best to keep the team in the game, making 10 saves. Brandon Misuraca, Dylan Penrod and Joe Whitacre each had two shots.
The teams record falls to 1-8, but will look to break the losing streak when the Spartans play in front of the home crowd on October 6th against Benedictine University. Game time will start at 6:00 p.m.
