BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Missouri Baptist University's men's tennis team saw its share of ups and downs on Saturday. The team dropped its match 8-1 to Baker University, but defeated Tabor College 6-3.
Missouri Baptist (6-3) lost for the first time since February 17 on Saturday, ending its winning streak at six matches. While the Baker Wildcats were impressive in their victory, the Spartans continued what could be the most impressive streak of all this season, number one doubles.
The team's one victory came at number one doubles thanks to the superior play of Mike Rubinelli and Drew Morris. The pair came to play on Saturday and took down their counterparts, Zach Aldrich and Nick Baker, 8-2. It was the team's ninth win in a row.
Though the team lost the competition, several key matches were hotly contested. Connor Stevenson and Kirk Tass were narrowly defeated at number two doubles, 7-9. The same was said for Nick Thorburg and Nathan Stachowski, losing 6-8.
Spartan freshman Ian Furey provided what was one of the most exciting singles battles of the day. After dropping the first set 6-3, Furey came roaring back to win the second, 6-2, sending the match to a tiebreaker set. Baker's Casey Gleue bested Furey in the final set, 10-5, ending the rally.
Against Tabor, the Spartans played fantastic from start to finish. MBU started things off with doubles wins from Rubinelli/Morris and Furrey/Tass (number two) to go up 2-1.
As singles began, Missouri Baptist's top players extended the lead. Rubinelli won in a dramatic, two-set sweep of Tabor's David Simmet, 7-6, 6-3, while Morris and Connor Stevenson brought home dominant victories of their own at number two and three singles.
Missouri Baptist came away from the weekend with a 6-3 record overall and will take on Lewis and Clark on Tuesday in its next match.
