SPARTANS MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW

ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist men's basketball trailed by one at the half but rallied its offense to collect a 74-67 victory on Saturday.

 

Missouri Baptist (10-11, 5-3 AMC) put a 10-2 lead on the board early, but was unable to hold its advantage throughout the half. The score was 10-5 with 12 minutes remaining in the opening frame as both teams went over two minutes without recording a bucket.

The Trojans began to come back, however, with just over 11 minutes remaining. The team put together a 10-2 run to make it a 15-12 Spartan deficit. Though MBU stayed within striking distance thanks to the 20 first-half points of LeAndre Johnson and Adrian Kuyinu, the home team trailed 31-32 after the first 20 minutes of play.

After the half, MBU seemed to quickly get its act together. The Spartans went on a 9-0 run to open the period and put together a 40-32 lead. Missouri Baptist continued to build on this lead throughout the game and took advantage of xx Trojan turnovers in the game.

The Spartans finished the game in fine fashion and never let its lead slip below five points in the third win in a row for the team.

For the Trojans, Abraham Arinyakono led the team with 21 points and was 9-18 shooting on the day. Jay Jones and Mario Dean also finished in double figures. With the loss, HLG dropped to 0-8 in conference play and 3-17 overall.

Missouri Baptist had solid offensive play on the day from Johnson and Kuyinu. Johnson, currently in search of the 1,000 career point mark recorded 17 points and went 7-10 from the floor. Kuyinu also finished in double figures with and led the team with 18 points.

The win was a new high-water mark in terms of consecutive wins for the Spartans on the year. The team has now won three in a row and will look to make it four when they return to action on Thursday, Jan. 31 at home when Park University travels to St. Louis. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
