WONSEWITH LEADS MEN'S SOCCER TO 3-1 STATEMENT WIN OVER LYON

ST. LOUIS- The Missouri Baptist men's soccer team continued its winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Lyon College, today. The win moved the Spartans to 6-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in AMC play.

"The guys really stepped up in the second half," said head coach Jake Alvernia. "They knew the magnitude of the game and really wanted this one."

Corbin Rodriguez posted another victory in net for the Spartans, as he made seven second half saves. Greg Kranz and Joe Wonsewith led the offense with two shots on goal, each. Providence Tucker also recorded a shot on goal.

For the second game in a row, the Spartans fell behind as Lyon scored 17 minutes into the contest.

In the 38th minute, MBU caught a major break, as the Scots misplayed the ball, resulting in a Spartans goal. The two teams would head into halftime with the score tied 1-1. Lyon's lone shot on goal in the half ended in the back of the net, while MBU also had one shot on goal.

Just two minutes into the second half, goalkeeper Corbin Rodriguez picked up a yellow yard in the box, resulting in a lengthy discussion by the referees. The final decision allowed Lyon's Abdullah Adam to shoot a penalty kick. Adam blasted a shot towards the left side of the net, but Corbin Rodriguez went completely horizontal to make the save and keep the score tied 1-1.

Joe Wonsewith had several chances to continue his goal streak, but was held quiet until the 67th minute. He took a pass from Greg Kranz and drilled a shot past the goalkeeper, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead. Kranz earned his third assist of the season, while Wonsewith netted his AMC-leading 10th goal of the season and has now scored a goal in all seven games.

Before the Blue-Out crowd had a chance to settle down, Greg Kranz would gave the Spartans a 3-1 lead, following a perfect pass from Wonsewith. It was Kranz's fourth goal of the year and Wonsewith's third assist of the season.

Missouri Baptist nearly added another goal in the final 20 minutes, but would settle for a 3-1 victory. In terms of personal stats, the lone disappointment from today's game was that Oscar Rojas' assist streak was snapped at six games.

The Spartans travel to Williams Baptist for another big AMC matchup on Saturday at 1 pm.
