ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist had issues containing Lyon College's Jordan Layrock from start to finish as Spartan men's basketball squad dropped its fourth game in a row, 67-59.
Missouri Baptist (2-13, 2-4 AMC) led for the majority for the first half, but succomed to the strong play of the senior forward from Lyon College. Layrock finished the night with 29 points, four shy of his career-high, and made it tough on Missouri Baptist all night.
MBU led by as many as 10 in the first half and recorded five three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of play. Missouri Baptist rode the hot perimeter shooting all the way into the locker room, where the team led 27-24.
After the half, the Spartans struggled to contain the Scots' offense. Though MBU was able to get the lead back to six after a Kalvin Lewis three-pointer just minutes into the half, Lyon began chipping away at the lead.
Lyon went on a 13-0 run early in the second half to take a 32-39 lead and never relinquished control. Heading down the stretch, the Scots led by as many at 13 after two free throws by Devonte Young, but the Spartans battled back into the game.
Missouri Baptist went on its own 13-4 run, led by two, three-pointers by Chad Smith, and cut the deficit to four, but that is as close as the team got.
Overall, the Spartans were out-rebounded 26-19 on the night, but won the perimeter shooting battle. As a team, Missouri Baptist shot a blazing 53 percent from behind the arc. Kalvin Lewis and Chris Buzzell both went 2-3 from three-point land, but Chad Smith bested them both. The senior finished the night 3-5 from outside.
Outside of Layrock's outstanding performance, the Scots also received solid play from Young. The Lyon guard posted 16 points and six rebounds on the night to help his team to its fifth conference victory.
Next-up for the Spartans will be Harris Stowe on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex.
