ST. LOUIS – Kalvin Lewis netted 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, but the Missouri Baptist men's basketball team fell to Harris-Stowe, 86-71. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-21 and 5-12 in American Midwest Conference play.
Missouri Baptist shot 39 percent from the floor in the contest, making 28-of-72 shots. The Spartans hit on just 3-of-17 three-pointers, but made 12-of-16 free throw attempts. Missouri Baptist won the rebounding battle, 50-35, but could not stop the hot shooting of the Hornets.
Harris-Stowe (5-23, 5-12 AMC) sank 51 percent of the shots from the floor, draining 36-of-70 shots. The Hornets made 4-of-8 from deep range, but were just 10-for-21 from the free throw line.
Kalvin Lewis filled the stat line, leading the Spartans with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor, including 1-of-4 from deep territory. He sank 3-of-5 from the charity stripe, and had an impressive 15 rebounds. Lewis also had three assists and two steals in the defeat.
Corey McKinney nearly had a double-double, netting 14 points and eight rebounds. He made 4-of-10 shots from the floor, and sank all six free throws. McKinney pulled down four offensive and four defensive boards.
Chris Buzzell was the third Spartan to score in double-figures. He netted 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting, and hit 1-of-3 from three-point range.
The Spartans trailed at the halftime break, 47-31 after shooting 40 percent from the floor. They hit 13-of-32 shots from the field in the half, but the Hornets hit 20-of-42 shots from the floor.
In the second half, the Spartans trailed by 25 points with 4:54 left in the contest, but were able to make a bit of a comeback. The Spartans outscored the Hornets 40-39 in the second stanza.
Missouri Baptist hit 15-of-40 shots from the floor in the final 20 minutes, but Harris-Stowe continued their hot shooting, and made 16-of-28 shots from the field.
