ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist men's basketball picked-up its seventh win and first on the road in 2014 as the team grabbed a 71-68 win over Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday evening.
Missouri Baptist (7-21, 6-12 AMC) moved to seventh place in the AMC with the win, thanks in large part to senior Kalvin Lewis. The Houston native recorded 23 points and went 2-3 from behind the arc in the win over the Trojans.
The Spartans trailed by three, 36-33, heading into halftime and in the final frame, both teams went gunning for the win. The lead changed hands 11 times during the final 20 minutes, but in the end, the game went Missouri Baptist's way.
MBU led by as many as seven with just over four minutes to play, but the Trojans quickly posted a 7-0 run to tie it just over two minutes later. With just under a minute left on the clock, however, Joe Reed fouled MBU's Chris Buzzell. The Spartan freshman knocked-down both of his shots to put the Spartans up by two.
Seconds later, Kalvin Lewis fouled Hannibal's Jay Jones and sent him to the line to shoot two. Jones answered with two free throws of his own to tie the game with 35 seconds remaining.
In the end, however, it was Lewis who posted the final three points to secure the win for Missouri Baptist. Corey McKinney posted 13 points while Logan Quinn tied a career-high with 12 points in the game.
The win puts Missouri Baptist in seventh place in the AMC and in a prime position to host the first round of the conference tournament next Tuesday with two games remaining. The Nos. 6-8 seeds will host the Nos. 9-11 seeds for the chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
MBU's final two games will be against two of the toughest teams in the AMC in 2013-14 as the Spartans will welcome Park University to the friendly confines of the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex on Thursday. Missouri Baptist will complete its regular season schedule on the road against No. 7 Columbia College on Saturday.
Thursday evening's game will be the final Blue-Out of the basketball season. Free Blue-Out T-Shirts will be given away to the first 400 fans prior to the game. The team will also celebrate Senior Night as Kalvin Lewis, Lau'Ren Jones and Chad Smith will all be honored, along with the Spartan Cheer Squad seniors, prior to the game.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. against Park on Thursday.
