BRENDEL'S CAREER DAY LEADS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TO SWEEP OVER FREED-HARDEMAN

ST. LOUIS - [Box Score] After winning eleven of the first twelve contest of the season, the Missouri Baptist women's volleyball kicked off the American Midwest Conference season-opener on the right foot. The Spartans swept Freed-Hardeman in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, and 25-14.

No. 20 Missouri Baptist hit .388 in the contest, while limiting the Lady Lions to just a .214 attack percentage. The Spartans were without sophomore Mallory Dillon, who was injured against Quincy on Wednesday. Dillon injured her leg in that contest and is expected to miss several weeks of action.

Sophomore Jen Brendel played the match of her career. She led the Spartans with a career-high 14 kills on 21 swings with an attack percentage of .524. Brendel also posted one solo block and two block assists.

Freshman Kristina Medanovic posted 12 kills on 15 swings and had one solo block as well as three block assists.

Junior Ally Krus posted 45 assists, added two kills, one service ace, and had six digs.

The first set would feature a lot of drama between the two squads. Freed-Hardeman held the lead for the entire set until Taylor Cook blasted a kill to give the Spartans a 20-19 advantage. MBU was able to extend its lead to three points and would end the set on top, 25-22.

Set two was a complete 180-turn from set one. The Spartans never trailed in the set, thanks to an 8-1 start. Missouri Baptist was never in any danger of losing control of the set and by set's end, the Spartans had their largest lead, 25-16. The navy and white hit .500 in the set, pounding 18 kills on 26 swings.

The final set featured more of the same from the 12-1 Spartans. MBU trailed just one time in set three, but it was an early 6-5 deficit. The Spartans quickly rebounded by outscoring FHU 20-8 the remainder of the set to win 25-14.

Missouri Baptist will have the weekend off before traveling to take on rival Lindenwood-Belleville on Tuesday. The 2014-15 campaign marks the first season for the Lynx in the American Midwest Conference.
