ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist men's soccer team put up a good fight against William Woods, but fell 1-0 in double overtime on Tuesday.
William Woods (8-1-1, 3-1) took control of the game from the start. The Owls outshot Missouri Baptist ( 0-8-2, 0-3) 12-1 in the first half and 14-2 in the second half. MBU was kept back on their own side of the field with John Schnurbusch in the net.
Schnurbusch held the Owls to no goals through 100 minutes of playing time with eleven saves on the game.
In overtime the Spartans had the only shot throughout the first 10 minutes. Looking for the golden goal to win the game, Jamie Skillen made an effort to win the game for the Spartans. The talented MBU midfielder put a big shot on goal from about 40 feet out, beating Owl keeper Ivan Monterrubio, but the shot clanged off the crossbar. This was as close as the Spartans got in the game.
As the second overtime came around only 22 seconds were needed for William Woods' Jake Hawes to hit the back of the net for the game ending goal.
The Spartans will proceed in conference play against Freed Hardeman as the team will travel to Henderson, Tenn. on Friday, October 3. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
