ST. LOUIS - [Box Score] The Missouri Baptist men's basketball team could not find any rhythm in a 83-47 loss to Lyon College. The Spartans were swept by the Scots in two meetings this season.
Missouri Baptist (4-17, 3-11 AMC) made a season-low 16 field goals over the 40 minutes of play on 45 attempts. Just two nights after ripping down a season-high 60 rebounds, the Spartans tallied a season-low 20 rebounds in today's defeat. MBU protected the ball, though, and only turned the ball over nine times, a season-low.
Lyon (13-9, 10-5 AMC) scored 32 of its 83 points inside the paint and shot an eye-popping .600 from the field. The Scots made 27-of-45 field goals and connected on 6-of-11 three point shots. They also won the rebounding battle, 35-20.
Junior guard Stephen Buckner II led MBU with 13 points on 4-of-10 from the floor. He added 3-of-6 three pointers and 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
Senior Adrian Kuyinu was the other Spartan to record double figures. He netted 10 points on 3-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-10 from the charity stripe. The guard added a team-high six rebounds, including three in the offensive zone. He added a team-high four assists, and recorded a block and a steal.
Junior forward James King had a tall task when facing the tough Lyon forward, Ben Worlow. The 6-7 forward came into the contest averaging 16 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per contest, and swatted 27 blocks. King scored eight points on 3-of-3 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the charity line. He added three rebounds, and did not allow Worlow to earn a blocked shot.
Over the first 11 minutes of the contest, Lyon built a 22-12 lead, but MBU twice cut the deficit to seven points. Buckner splashed a 3-ball to cut the deficit to 22-15, and Buzzell scooped-in a layup to cut the Scot lead to 24-17 with 7:33 left in the half.
Two minutes later, Buckner drained two free throws to cut the Lyon lead to 27-20, but the Scots ended the final 5:30 of the half on a 16-5 run and led 43-25 at the break.
The Spartans made 10-of-22 from the floor over the first 20 minutes of play, but the Scots could not be stopped, as they made 17-of-23 from the field.
Buckner drained a three pointer on the first shot of the half to cut the deficit to 43-28, but MBU could not get the Lyon lead under 15 points.
The Scots needed just 4:31 to extend the lead to 20 points and nine minutes later extended the lead to 30 points at 68-37.
Missouri Baptist was limited to just 20 points in the half, compared to the 40 scored by Lyon.
When the final horn sounded, the Scots ran away with a 36 point victory.
The Spartans will host No. 5 Freed-Hardeman on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
