ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist Women's Wrestling fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 34-12 loss to Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
Oklahoma City jumped out to a 9-0 lead after Shelby Morrison won by technical fall and Missouri Baptist forfeited the 123-pound weight class.
The Spartans received one point after Erika Mihalca lost by a close 16-12 decision. They added another when Kassandra Castruita lost by a 4-2 decision in the 155-pound weight class.
However, Castruita's point made the match just a 25-2 contest. Oklahoma City proceeded to win by technical fall and a pin in the next two matches to add nine points and stretch its lead to 32.
Missouri Baptist then closed the gap to 34-12 after winning by forfeit in the 101 and 109-pound weight class.
The Spartans also lost their second round against Wayland Baptist 28-19. Mihalca pinned her opponent in the 130-pound weight class to even the score at 5-5. Missouri Baptist then took a 10-5 lead when Wayland Baptist forfeited the 136-pound weight class.
However, that Spartan lead was short-lived. The 10-5 lead quickly turned into a 27-11 deficit after WBU won five straight individual matches. Despite those struggles, Missouri Baptist closed out the match strong.
They won the final two individual matches to cut the final deficit to nine. Sam Diaz defeated Rhonda Johnson by a 6-5 decison and Marylou Martinez closed things out by pinning her opponent and giving Missouri Baptist five points,
The Spartans will next compete in the Missouri Valley College Open on Nov. 14.
