WICHITA, Kan.- Maggie Ortmann becomes the fourth freshman All-American in NAIA National Championship history for Missouri Baptist University. She claims this honor with an eighth-place finish in the 145-pound weight class this weekend in Wichita.
Ortmann started her run against eventual national champion Jamilah McBryde of Life University (Ga.) and, despite a good effort, fell and moved to the consolation side of the bracket. Ortmann's first match of the backside was a tough one against Bridgette Sotomayor of Doane (Neb.). To start the match, Ortmann was hit twice for passivity and placed on the shot clock, where she had 30 seconds to score. Ortmann went to work, and with five seconds left on the shot clock, found the score to take a 2-0 lead. Ortmann closed the period with an additional score to lead 4-0 at the break. Sotomayor and Ortmann both exchanged a pair of scores, and Ortmann held on for the 6-2 victory. Ortmann was pitted against the third-ranked Amelia Fawcett of Life. Despite the number by Fawcett's name, Ortmann dominated early, where she had a four-point move and two more scores to take an 8-0 ahead of the first period to send her to the blood round.
Ortmann faced the fourth-seeded Genesis Gilmore of the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.). Gilmore took the early 4-0 lead over Ortmann after a pair of scores, but Ortmann answered back and found two takedowns, and then captured Gilmore's arm and wrist to turn her, and after holding Gilmore on her back for forty seconds, the referee called the fall, and Ortmann claimed All-American status for the first time in her career.
Zoe Fries, Kenlee Fish, and De'yton Young all competed at the event. Fries picked up a first-period fall at the tournament.
The Spartans finished as a Top-25 program in the country at the Championship, and a Top-6 team in their new conference, the Heart of America.
