Box Score CONWAY, Ark. – [BOX SCORE] The Spartans used a season-high 13 3-pointers to down Central Baptist College 80-71 Saturday night to win their fifth straight game.
Four of the five games during the Spartans (8-4, 3-1) win streak have come on the road, the other at a neutral site. The 13 3-pointers were the most for Missouri Baptist in a single game since January of 2009 when they hit 15 against Williams Baptist.
The Spartans held on despite a late Central Baptist (4-6, 1-4) rally. The Mustangs used a 10-0 run to shrink a double-digit lead to two with 1:45 left in the game. However, the team's final 3-pointer of the game by Luke Call stretched the lead back to five at 76-71 and proved decisive in the win. Missouri Baptist scored the game's final seven points.
The Spartans shot 53.8 percent from the field overall and never trailed. They hit 13 of their 26 3-point attempts.
Isaiah Cotton and Stephen Buckner hit back-to-back buckets in the opening minute to give Missouri Baptist an early 4-0 lead and they would stay in control throughout.
The lead ballooned to 17 points on three different occasions behind six first-half makes from distance. The last was a 36-19 advantage with 5:20 to go after a bucket from Call. The freshman hit a team-high four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.
However, the Mustangs didn't go down quietly and made a late push to end the half. They outscored the Spartans by eight in the final five minutes to trail just 42-33 at the break. The Missouri Baptist lead fell all the way to six in the final seconds, but Cody Hudson hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left. Saturday's game marked Hudson's first of the season.
Buckner led the way with nine first-half points and 16 overall. He joined Call, David Gabrovsek and Pablo Hernandez in double-figures, who each chipped in 11 points.
Central Baptist made another late rally in the second half to nearly pull off the upset. Missouri Baptist led 73-61 with 3:49 left in the game after a Gabrovsek triple, but the Mustangs responded with a 10-0 run to shrink the Spartan lead to two with 1:45 to go.
The three-ball came through one final time for the Spartans, as Call hit his fourth and final 3-pointer to extend the lead back to five at 76-71. Missouri Baptist then got key defensive stops down the stretch and hit its free throws to escape with the nine-point victory.
John Caraballo corralled a team-high 11 rebounds to help the Spartans win the rebounding battle 34-30. Missouri Baptist also committed a season-low six turnovers in the win. They'll return to action on Dec. 31 at home against Park. Tip is set for 2:00 pm.
