SPARTANS WIN OVERTIME THRILLER

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCOREEduardo Mendes-Maia lofted his shot over the St. Francis goalkeeper in the 94th minute to give the Missouri Baptist Spartans a 5-4 over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at CBC Field.

Missouri Baptist (2-2) needed overtime to get past a pesky St. Francis squad. The Wildcats (0-6) trailed 4-1 in the 67th minute, but rattled off three unanswered goals to tie the game at 4-4.

The final two St. Francis goals came less than two minutes apart, with the final one finding the net in the 87th minute. However, Mendes-Maia halted the Wildcat rally and the game with his overtime goal.

Prior to the St. Francis late run, Missouri Baptist rattled off three unanswered goals of its own. The second half opened up very choppy with several fouls, until Benjamin Randolph found the net. Randolph headed the ball past the Wildcat goalie off a corner kick from Gerardo Espinoza less than 10 minutes in to the second half.

Espinoza then took matters into his own hands to put the Spartans up 3-1. He used some fancy footwork to slide by a few St. Francis defenders before eventually being taken down inside the penalty box. Espinoza then calmly knocked the penalty kick past the diving keeper to finish things off.

Justin Shuttenberg added another Spartan goal in the 67th minute. St. Francis goalie Jesse Flores batted down a shot from forward Josh Phillips, but Shuttenberg was there to clean up the miss and buried one right past Flores to put Missouri Baptist up 4-1.

However, St. Francis wouldn't go away despite the large deficit. They rattled off three goals in less than 12 minutes to tie things and send the game into overtime. Mendes-Maia saved the Spartans from a late collapse with his game-ending goal.

Missouri Baptist controlled a majority of the first half. They started the scoring with a penalty kick from Luka Milcic to go up 1-0. Wildcat forward Bayden Lee tied things at 1-1 when he broke away from the pack and scored in the 30th minute.

The Spartans hit the road for a three-game road trip beginning on Thursday, September 17th at Asbury College.
