SPARTANS FALL TO WILLIAM WOODS 3-1

ST. LOUIS [BOX SCORE] - Missouri Baptist couldn't hold on to an early lead Wednesday afternoon during the team's 3-1 loss to William Woods.

The Spartans (2-6) led 1-0 at halftime, but surrendered three goals after the break. William Woods (7-2-1) extended their winning streak to four games with the victory.

The Owls outshot the Spartans 11-4 in the first half, including five in the first 15 minutes. However, strong play by the Spartan defense and goalie Brenden Carnahan kept William Woods off the scoreboard.

Carnahan made an impressive diving save in the 15th minute off a shot from Jesse Jordan. Yuri Pecanha then controlled the ball off the ensuing goal kick. Josh Phillips tracked down Pecanha's pass and slid just in time to knock the ball past the Owl's keeper and into the net. Phillip's first collegiate goal put the Spartans ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute.

Missouri Baptist held William Woods scoreless through the first 58 minutes, until the Owls capitalized on a corner kick. Jesse Bowers headed the cross from Lendell Louis-Jacques past Carnahan to tie the game at 1-1.

The Spartans struggled offensively in the second half and William Woods took advantage. Three of their 12 shots in the final frame found the net, including another in the 76th minute. Matheus Schmid went top-corner and drilled it in to put the Owls on top 2-1.

William Woods added an insurance goal in the 88th minute on Brett Hodges' penalty kick.

Missouri Baptist hits the road for four games starting on Saturday against Park (Mo.). The match begins at 2:00 p.m.
