BUZZER-BEATER DOWNS SPARTANS AT WILLIAMS BAPTIST

Box Score

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – [BOX SCORE] Williams Baptist guard Stanley Malcom hit the game-winning jumper as time expired to give the Eagles a come-from-behind 75-74 win over Missouri Baptist Thursday night.

The heart-breaking loss snapped the Spartans' (11-7, 6-4) three-game winning streak. Williams Baptist (6-6, 4-5) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and didn't lead again until Malcom's basket entered the net with 0.00 left on the clock.

Malcom hit a 3-pointer with 1:58 remaining to shrink the Spartan lead to 73-71. Two possessions later, Will Harrington went 1-for-2 from the line to put the Spartans back up by three, but EJ Rucker answered with two free throws on the other end to make it a 74-73 game with 57 seconds left.

After Harrington missed a jumper on the ensuing Missouri Baptist possession, John Caraballo came up with a big steal just as the Eagles looked to take a last-second lead. Caraballo then connected with Stephen Buckner on a pass up-ahead of the defense, but the ball was eventually dribbled out of bounds giving Williams Baptist one last chance with six seconds left. Malcom came through with the clutch shot to help the Eagles come away with the conference win.

Missouri Baptist responded with a 14-0 run after Williams Baptist recorded the first six points of the game. They led by as many as 11 in the first half on two separate occasions after a relatively back-and-forth opening 10 minutes.

A 3-pointer from Luke Call gave Missouri Baptist a 45-34 lead with 58 seconds left. However, the Eagles rattled off five straight points in the final minute to cut the lead to six at halftime.

Missouri Baptist shot 51.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes and 47.7 percent for the game. Chris Buzzell led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Isaiah Cotton was the only other Spartan to reach double-figures with 10 points.

A bucket from Caraballo off a feed from Buckner gave Missouri Baptist a 59-49 advantage with 14:21 left. The Eagles wouldn't go away however, and responded with a 9-0 run to cut the Spartan lead to one with 11:04 to go in the game.

Williams Baptist eventually tied things up at 64-64 with 9:14 to go and remained in striking distance, until taking the lead on Malcom's game-winner. The Eagles finished with four players in double-figures, led by Tevin Howard's 17 points.

Caraballo dished out a season-high seven assists in the loss. He also finished with nine points and seven rebounds. The Spartans will have a chance to bounce-back Saturday afternoon against Freed-Hardeman. Tip is set for 4:00 pm.
