Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Luke Call's game-winning 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, Jared White's late steal helped the Spartans upset No. 25 William Woods 88-86 in Fulton, Mo. and give Missouri Baptist its first win over a ranked opponent since Feb. 13, 2010.
That win, nearly six years ago, came against then No. 7 McKendree University in an 81-78 upset win at home. Current Missouri Baptist JV coach Brandon Roberson scored 30 points in that game.
The Spartans (12-8, 7-5) fouled William Woods guard Austin Lowery trailing 86-84 with 22 seconds left. Lowery missed the front-end of the one-and-one giving Missouri Baptist a chance to hold for the final shot.
Instead, the Spartans took the first good shot available- a 3-pointer from Call with 13 seconds remaining. The freshman from Mt. Vernon, Mo. swished the triple from the top of the key to give the Spartans an 87-86 lead, their first since the 4:16 mark and just their second of the half. He was celebrating his 20th birthday.
The Owls (14-8, 10-4) tried to set-up for a game-winner, but White came through with a big-time steal. The junior, who had a game-high 21 points, stripped William Woods guard Kevin House and dribbled the ball toward the basket until he was eventually fouled with 2.8 seconds remaining.
White knocked down the first, but missed the second giving William Woods one final chance. Trey Mitchell's last-second shot clanked off the iron to give the Spartans the dramatic road win. The Owls entered the game 6-0 at home in conference play and winners of eight straight in Anderson Arena overall.
The opening five minutes belonged to Missouri Baptist, who jumped out to a 20-9 lead, their largest of the game. That lead was short-lived as the Owls responded with a 17-6 run to tie the game. Despite shooting 65.5 percent in the first 20 minutes, the Spartans trailed 52-47 at the halftime break.
The Owls extended that lead to as many as nine in the second half and didn't relinquish it until 4:16 to go on a free throw from Will Harrington. A bucket from House put William Woods back on top and the Spartans wouldn't lead again until Call's clutch triple in the final seconds.
The birthday boy finished with eight points and hit both of his 3-point attempts. Several Spartans shined statistically, including White with 21 points and five assists. Harrington had a team-high 10 points in the first-half and notched his second double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. John Caraballo added 17 points and David Gabrovsek pitched in 11.
The Spartans also manned the boards, winning the rebound battle 42-30. Deon Pettigrew led a balanced Owl-attack with 16 points. Five Owls reached double-figures.
After a day off, the Spartans return to the court on Saturday against Lindenwood-Belleville at home in the AMC Game of the Week. Tip is set for 4:00 and will be part of Coaches v. Cancer – Suits and Sneakers Week. To learn more on how you can take part and participate, click HERE.
