Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist led briefly to open the game, but couldn't hold on against the Lyon Scots in a 4-2 loss Saturday afternoon.
MoBap struck first in the 26th minute when freshman Kyle Setchfield knocked in a goal off a cross from Josh Phillips. Gerardo Espinoza started the threat with a brilliant ball up to Phillips who then found Setchfield open for the goal. It was the freshman's third of the season.
The lead for MBU was short lived. Mario Alonso went upper left corner to bury the equalizer just one minute later. That started a string of three consecutive goals for Lyon and the Spartans would never recover. MBU fell to 7-6-3 with the loss and 4-5 in conference play.
"The guys had some very good moments today," head coach Jake Alvernia said. "We have to get better defensively. We are conceding way too many goals. Credit to Lyon though, they played well and earned the win."
Ignacio Milla scored for the Scots in the 30th minute to give them a 2-1 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Another goal in the second half put the Scots up two scores, before MBU answered back.
Setchfield played a key role in the other Spartan goal, setting up Espinoza for his seventh goal of the season. The goal cut the lead to 3-2 in the 65th minute to put pressure back on the Scots. Setchfield was named Man of the Match for his strong performance on Saturday.
"Kyle played very well in his role and was extremely effective today," Alvernia said.
Right when the Spartans made things close, Lyon answered right back with an insurance goal three minutes later. Jack Fleming helped lead Lyon to its sixth conference win with its fourth and final goal. The Scots outshot MBU 11-6 for the game.
The match completed the Spartans road portion of the schedule. They end the regular season with two home games next week beginning with Lindenwood-Belleville on Wednesday. The match is set to start at 1:00 pm.
