Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist scored three unanswered goals to come-from-behind and defeat Central Baptist 3-1 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
The win clinched the Spartans (8-7-3, 5-6 AMC) a spot in the upcoming AMC Tournament. They will be the No. 7 seed and head to No. 2 Lindenwood-Belleville on Saturday, Nov. 5th.
The Mustangs (2-14, 1-10 AMC) struck first on Saturday with a goal in the 7th minute. Off a free kick from Oscar Martinez, Ben Holmes kicked it on the fly with his right foot and into the net. The 1-0 CBC lead made the Spartans play catch-up for the remainder of the half.
The offense struggled for quality scoring chances until the 40th minute when Erick Ocampo found Josh Phillips in the box on a beautiful pass. Phillips finished things off with the equalizer to tie things at 1-1. The goal gave the Spartans momentum heading into halftime.
At the break, the team's 12 seniors were honored. The group included: Jordan Peters, Saphir Salvador, Luka Milcic, Erick Ocampo, Connar Armstrong, Selmir Ademovic, Darwin Soto, Vladmi Joseph, Thales Teixeira, Aris Nukic, Mats Mehus and Erik Cardona.
After honoring their achievements over the past few years, the Spartans, led by the seniors helped add another victory to their memory book. The senior Ocampo gave MBU its first lead of the game when he rifled in a shot in the 53rd minute. Phillips was credited with the assist that put MBU ahead 2-1.
The team controlled possession more often than not in the second half and added its third and final goal in the 68th minute. After a penalty just outside the box, Teixeira took the free kick and placed a beautiful ball into the top right corner of the net. Teixeira's first goal of the season put MBU ahead 3-1 for good.
The Spartans now look forward to the AMC Tournament against Lindenwood-Belleville. The time and location of that match is still to be determined.
