SPARTANS STUNG BY BEES IN FINAL SECONDS

Box Score

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] A 3-pointer from St. Ambrose guard Jacoby Posely completed the Bees comeback over Missouri Baptist with four seconds left. Missouri Baptist dropped its first game of the season 84-82 Tuesday night.

The Spartans led nearly the entire night, but couldn't ever quite fend off the road team out of Davenport, Iowa. Two free throws from Eric Dust gave St. Ambrose its first lead of the game since the early minutes at 77-76 with 2:21 on the clock. The Bees then won the seesaw battle down the stretch to stun the Spartans.

With just under a minute left, Will Harrington picked a perfect time for this first 3-pointer of the season when he hit to tie things up at 81-81. After a big stop on the ensuing possession, Johnny Benson corralled a huge offensive board and headed to the charity stripe. The junior went 1-of-2 from the line to give MBU the lead back with 16 seconds left, leading into Posely's big shot.

Returning NAIA All-American Jared White made his presence felt in his season debut. The senior scored 17 points and put the Spartans ahead by 11, 29-18 with 8:10 left in the first half. However, the Bees answered with a 21-10 run toward the end of the half to knot the game up at 39-all. A late bucket from Jahmouri Robinson gave MBU a 41-39 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans once again led by as many as 11, this time at 60-49 with 12:51 remaining. Just like the first half, the Bees finished the final minutes strong to walk away with the victory.

The two big men for both teams posted big performances in David Gabrovsek and Eric Dust. Gabrovsek played well from both inside and out, hitting two 3-pointers and crafting together several moves in the post to finish with a team-high 19 points. The outing ties the seniors career-high. Dust led all scorers with 26 points and connected on a few big buckets down the stretch.

Posely finished with 19 points and Jake Meeske had 12 to lead the Bees. SAU shot 44.3 percent for the game while the Spartans hit at a 39.7 percent clip. Chris Buzzell had another strong game for MBU and finished with 12 points. The Spartans also won the rebounding battle 41-34 and had 12 offensive boards.

The Spartans entered this game 3-0 for the first time since 2003-04. Ironically, the Bees also handed MBU their first loss in that season as well. The team will look to rebound this weekend at the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic. MBU plays Avila on Friday at 5:30 pm and William Penn the following day at 1:00 pm.
