Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] The Spartans took care of business Thursday night, dominating St. Louis College of Pharmacy from start to finish in the team's 71-36 win.
All 12 Spartans to play scored in the rout, including senior center James King who recorded a career-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Missouri Baptist (17-10, 12-7) jumped out to an early 12-2 lead on the winless Eutectics (0-23, 0-20) and held a double-digit margin for nearly the entire 40 minutes.
A strong defensive effort helped limit STLCOP to just 10 first-half points on 5-of-23 shooting from the field. David Gabrovsek scored nine consecutive points for MBU in the first half to extend a 25-8 lead to 26 points with 2:45 remaining. The solo 9-0 run contributed to the junior's team-high 11 points in the first half.
Gabrovsek finished with a team-high 13 along with Jared White. They joined King in double-figures, who also nearly notched a double-double with nine rebounds.
The Spartans led 34-10 at the break and shot 58.6 percent in the second half to coast to victory. The navy and white struggled from distance (6-for-25), but found success driving to the rim all game, especially in the second half.
White and Chris Buzzell attacked early and often in the second half to combine for 10 of the team's first 12 points. That helped extend the lead up to 34 and allowed head coach Matt Brock to empty his bench and give his starters a well-deserved rest.
MBU finally found its touch from beyond the arc when sharpshooter Michael Asleson checked in and knocked down a pair of triples in the game's final 15 minutes. King and Cody Hudson then combined to score 15 of the team's final 18 points of the game over the last 7:34.
Hudson finished with five points and three rebounds. Jake Terry set up several of those buckets and finished with six assists, only behind Will Harrington's team-high seven dimes.
Kyle Jones led all scorers with 15 points to pace the Eutectics. The Spartans will look for their fourth straight victory on Saturday at home against Harris-Stowe. Tip is set for 4:00 pm.
