ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist men's tennis team took another step towards the regular season conference title on Saturday. The Spartans upset the Baker University Wildcats, the highest ranked team in the conference based on the last NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll. With the win, Missouri Baptist remains undefeated in conference play and improves to 4-0.
Missouri Baptist (6-6, 4-0 AMC) took the doubles advantage for the eighth time of the season and the fourth match in a row, winning two of three doubles matches.
At No.1 doubles, the duo of Lucas Oliveira and Quinton Argent won 8-5, picking up their second conference win.
At No.2, James Tobin and Ricardo Martin made quick work of their opponents, winning 8-3. The duo picked up their team leading ninth win of the season and their fourth in a row.
The Spartans did not let go of the lead during singles, picking up four more wins at No.'s 2, 3, 4, and 5.
At No.2 singles, senior Quinton Argent battled back after dropping the first set to pick up his first win of the season, winning 3-6 6-3 10-1.
Sophomore Ricardo Martin picked up his third win a row, winning in straight sets, 6-4 6-1. The Spartan No.3 singles player improved his record to a team best 6-4.
Not to be outdone by his partner, freshman James Tobin won in spectacular fashion, 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 6-4. The Australian native has been on fire as of late, winning five in a row.
The match against Baker was the sixth time of the season that Tobin and Martin won both their singles and doubles matches.
Junior Sean Nanney also continued his win streak, cruising to a 6-2 6-2 victory.
"Another big match, another team in the top 30, another conference match, another example of winning ugly," Head Coach Cole Stevenson said after the match. "We can't seem to get all 8 guys clicking at once, but we keep finding ways. 4-0 in conference is a great place to be."
The Spartans return to action with a road match at Principia College on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
