Box Score ST. LOUIS- [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball wrapped up its longest road trip of the season with a three-set sweep of Freed-Hardeman on Friday night (25-18, 25-18, 25-19).
In the opening set, both teams struggled to gain separation early. Neither side could push the lead beyond two points until a kill by Kelly Wilson turned the tide and gave MBU a 16-13 lead. From there, the Spartans settled in and claimed the set 25-18. Sophomore Marija Tosic led the way with five kills in the opening frame.
Missouri Baptist jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two, but Freed fought back to gain the edge at 15-14. Then, just as she did in the first set, Kelly Wilson provided a timely kill to flip momentum. This time it spurred MBU to an 11-3 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Spartans finished things off in style in the third set. After falling behind early, MBU went on a 9-1 surge to take complete control. Three kills from Mallory Dillon set the table, before a deadly strike from Megan Huffman locked up the match for Missouri Baptist.
Marija Tosic was the star for the Spartans. The sophomore set career highs in kills (nine) and block assists (four).
Tina Medanovic and Cate Cigarini continued to give their opponents fits in the middle. The European pair combined for half of MBU's six team blocks. The offensive contributions were there as well. Medanovic was second to Tosic with eight kills. Cigarini was next in line with seven kills.
On defense, the Spartans needed help from everyone on Friday night. Mallory Dillon led the way with 10 digs. Marija Tosic added nine of her own, while Megan Huffman and Natalie Gremaud contributed eight apiece. Seven digs from Cate Cigarini rounded out the scoring.
This was the end of a season-long eight match road trip for Missouri Baptist. The Spartans went 6-2 on the trip and now await their first home match in nearly a month. They'll welcome Lyon College to the SRC next Friday night, September 23, at 7 pm.
