Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] The Missouri Baptist offense broke out of its scoring slump with six goals Tuesday night in a 6-0 road win over Evangel University.
The Spartans (3-2-3) six goals equaled the number of times they found the net in the previous five games combined. They used four first-half goals to bury an Evangel team that entered the game 4-2 with wins over LSU-Alexandria and AMC member Williams Baptist.
"The boys played with intensity and desire," head coach Jake Alvernia said. "The difference was good finishing today. The defense also got after it and shut down their chances."
The navy and white made the most of their chances against the Crusaders, scoring six of their 11 total shots. Gerardo Espinoza started the scoring with a goal in the 11th minute and Rafael Rangel tacked on another in the 21st to put MBU ahead 2-0.
Thales Teixeira set up the next two goals to help Missouri Baptist lead 4-0 at halftime. He assisted on Kyle Setchfield's goal in the 29th minute and Justin Schuttenberg's first goal of the season moments later.
"Thales was a difference maker today," Alvernia said. "He was very creative and was named Man of the Match."
Though it took longer for the goals to fall in the second half, the Spartans continued to control play after halftime. The defense allowed just one shot on goal the entire game to help goalie Zach Wetzel pickup the shutout.
The 79th minute saw senior Vladymi Joseph score his first career goal and Selmir Ademovic added another with three minutes to go.
The team will now have a few days off before heading to Columbia, Mo. on Saturday to face the Cougars in conference play. The match is set for 2:30 pm.
