Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Two second-half goals helped the Spartans top Stephens and remain undefeated in conference play. Morgan Mell and Riley Janvrin both found the net to ensure MBU would walk away victorious.
The navy and white had plenty of scoring chances, but didn't capitalize until the 68th minute when Mell scored off a corner kick from Danielle Wilde. 24 previous shots hadn't passed Stars goalie Maeghan Ely until that point.
MBU outshot Stephens 31-3 for the game, including a 19-1 margin in the first half. Credit Ely with 13 saves while the Spartan offense remained on the attack throughout the game.
Freshman Riley Janvrin led the charge with 10 total shots, including six on goal. However, she too couldn't sneak a shot past Ely until late in the game. Just over five minutes after Mell's goal, Janvrin saw the ball go past the keeper to put the Spartans ahead 2-0. It was the freshman's first collegiate goal. Wilde helped set up the score with another well placed corner kick and was credited with her second assist of the game (fourth of the season).
The Spartan defense kept things easier on Spartan goalie Alex Lair. The Stars managed just three shots and not a single shot on goal in the contest. The 2x AMC Defensive Player of the Week picked up the shutout in the process.
Wilde (six shots, two on goal) and Alyssa Matz (five shots, three on goal) were also active on the offensive end. Wilde hit the post in the 82nd minute that would have put MBU up three goals. The Spartans continue conference play on Saturday when they take on No. 15 Columbia. The match is set for 12:00 pm.
