ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Women's Soccer dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Columbia College on Monday afternoon at Spartan Field. The Cougars scored the only goal of the day in the dying seconds of the first half.
Columbia came into the match heavily favored with a record of 14-1 but the Spartans had a clear plan. MBU pressured the ball and forced the No. 5 ranked Cougars into difficult positions.
The Spartans finished the first half with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. However, the slightest defensive breakdown in the final minute of the half was all Columbia needed. Leading scorer Laurie Frew found space in the midfield with less than 30 seconds left and connected with forward Molly Klein. Klein managed to get a shot off from 10 yards out that beat MBU keeper Alex Lair to the far post.
Columbia buckled down defensively in the second half and denied the Spartans even a single shot on goal. Lair made three more stops after the break to keep it a one goal deficit. The senior finished the match with five total saves.
Missouri Baptist fell to 7-6-1 overall and 5-4 in the AMC. The next stop will be an away match with Harris Stowe on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm.
