ST. LOUIS-- [BOX SCORE] Reinhardt University (Ga.) made their way to the Petty SRC for the first time in history on Friday night. The series began with a win for the home team, as the Spartans took the match in four sets.
The Eagles defeated Lindenwood-Belleville right before taking on MBU, which some would say could have been an advantage. Setters Rachel Poole and Natalie Hecht were both unable to play due to injuries, so junior Ana Oliveira stepped up at the position for the Spartans.
Missouri Baptist started off a little rocky, however, they eventually regrouped and took the lead. The squad clocked in 17 kills for the first set, assisting them in taking the win, 25-17.
The second set started off in the Spartans favor, but Reinhardt was right on their tail throughout. A kill from Maggie Sorensen allowed MBU to regain possession and pull away, taking the second set, 25-21.
The third set rolled around, and the energy MoBap lost was promptly picked up by the Eagles. Reinhardt fed off the Spartans sudden loss of momentum, allowing them to push the match to a fourth set (25-13).
Poole hit the court for the fourth set with a bang as she assisted Cate Cigarini in starting it off with a kill, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The Spartans ultimately regained composure, immediately taking the lead, and staying there. Oliveira sealed the deal for Missouri Baptist with a game-winning kill (25-11).
Spartan Player of the Game, Marion Couraud, led the match with 23 kills total. The senior also contributed two service aces and five digs.
Sorensen followed behind with 10 kills of her own. Cigarini and Tina Medanovic each had nine total kills, as well as two and three total blocks, respectively.
The Spartans are on the road next week, squaring off with two fellow American Midwest Conference teams. They will first head to Fulton, Mo. to take on William Woods. The first serve is scheduled for 6 pm on October 23rd.
