ST. LOUIS— Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball kicked off their season with a big win, defeating Florida National in four sets (25-17, 18-25, 23-25, 21-25).
MBU had a slow start, allowing the Conquistadors to come out on top in the first set, 25-17. The Spartans used the early loss to build up momentum, and turn their game around for the rest of the match.
After a bit of a lineup change, the Spartans started to find their groove. Rachel Luebbers took over as libero and made a huge impact in the back row with just over four digs per set.
The front line was a force to be reckoned with tonight, putting up blocks and dishing out kills left and right. Cate Cigarini was nearly impassable, finishing the night with five solo and six assisted blocks. She also had 11 kills, barely trailing tonight's leader Tina Medanovic. Medanovic clocked in at 12 kills with only one error on 25 attack attempts, hitting just under .500.
Setter Rachel Poole made her Spartan debut one to remember, assisting in 40 out of 45 kills.
Missouri Baptist's Miami trip is off to a positive start. The tournament continues tomorrow with a doubleheader. Game one is at 10 am against Florida Memorial, and game two starts shortly after against Johnson & Wales at noon.
