ST. LOUIS—The No. 5 ranked Spartans made way to Columbia, Mo. to compete in the Cougars' Fall Classic over the weekend. They took on (23) Montana Tech and John Brown (Ark.) on Friday, sweeping both teams. With these two wins, the Spartans advance to a 23 game win streak, moving past the women's volleyball all-time win streak record (2012, 22W).
The first set against Montana Tech started as most expected, with the teams rallying back and forth. Tie at 21 apiece, a kill from
Mallory Moran gave MBU possession. Another kill from
Caterina Cigarini, followed by a service ace from the middle blocker gave the Spartans set one, 25-22.
The Orediggers lost gas heading into set two, allowing the Spartans to pull away early on. Kills from MBU, combined with errors from Montana Tech allowed MBU to take set two, 25-18.
Set three was another tight one with each team going on to 4+ point service runs. The teams were eventually tied at 22-22 when more kills from Moran and Cigarini, followed by a service ace from
Rachel Luebbers sealed the sweep for the Spartans, 25-22.
The second match of the day was another quick one for Missouri Baptist as they immediately rolled out to a comfortable lead (11-3). John Brown eventually found their groove, attempting to catch up to MBU, but the Spartans proved to be too much (25-14).
The Spartans gained another hefty lead. The Golden Eagles eventually gained momentum, but it was not enough to catch MBU as they took set two(25-16). Set three was all MBU as they cruised to their second sweep of the day, taking set three (25-9).
Outside hitter
Mallory Moran led the day with a total of 23 kills.
Maggie Sorensen and Cate Cigarini finished up at 18 and 17 total kills, respectively. Cigarini also finished the day with a total of 12 blocks.
Libero
Rachel Luebbers clocked out at 35 total digs, while
Nicole Bott served up an impressive eight service aces. Setter
Megan Huffman rounded things out with 55 total assists.
The Spartans continue play in Columbia on Saturday, October 13. They take on Bethel (Ind.) at 9 a.m., and (RV) Georgetown (Ky.) at 1 p.m.
