[Game One] [Game Two] No. 5 Missouri Baptist won its final two matches on Saturday to go 4-0 in the Columbia College Fall Volleyball Classic. The Spartans' second win of the day extended the NAIA's longest active winning streak to 25 games.
For their performances at the CC Fall Classic, the front row duo of
Mallory Moran and
Caterina Cigarini was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The first set of the day against the Bethel College (Ind.) Pilots began with relative ease for the Spartans. After battling hard in the first half of the set, MBU distanced themselves from Bethel and took set one 25-16.
The same could not be said of the second set. The largest lead for either team during the set was two points and it came down to the wire. Tied at 24,
Mallory Moran took a pass from
Megan Huffman and made it 25-24. An attacking error by Bethel gave the Spartans the win and a two-set advantage.
Set three was much of the same as the Spartans continued to battle hard against the Pilots. The Spartans were able to hold the lead throughout the match, while their opponents kept it within a few points. MBU found some breathing room towards the end of the set and completed the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
Mallory Moran led the way for Missouri Baptist in the first match with 17 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
Caterina Cigarini and
Megan Huffman played big parts as well. Cigarini collected 15 kills, a .520 hitting percentage, and six block assists. Huffman put up 45 assists and seven digs.
MBU kept the momentum going early into the second match against (RV) Georgetown College, topping the Tigers 25-17.
A dramatic set two brought the match even at one set a piece. Georgetown jumped out to an early 12-8 lead, but watched it quickly evaporate as the Spartans came surging back. The Tigers were able to regain control of the game, putting the Spartans on the ropes at 24-23. A Cigarini kill, assisted by Huffman, tied the game at 24-24. Unfortunately, MBU could not finish the comeback and fell 28-26.
The third set started off with seven points a side. A block by
Sophia Cristiani and
Maggie Sorensen put the Spartans up 8-7 and they never looked back. The Tigers made it competitive at the end, drawing it to 24-21. A kill by Moran slammed the door shut on any comeback talk as MBU took a 2-1 set lead through three.
The Spartans found themselves in an early hole in the fourth set as the Tigers jumped ahead 11-5. Missouri Baptist continued to tread water until late in the match, down 23-19. A six-point run, capitalized by a game finalizing block from
Aubrey Wilson and
Caterina Cigarini, finished off the set and the match.
Cigarini led the way once again with 18 kills, a .455 hitting percentage, two solo blocks and five block assists. Sorensen also had a strong game with 17 kills and 11 digs.
MBU jumps right back into conference play against the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State on Wednesday, October 17 at 6 p.m.
