ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Women's Basketball gave No. 14 Lyon College all they could handle on Thursday night but were denied late as the Scots escaped with a three-point victory.
The Spartans matched the Scots step for step in the first quarter. They led 15-14 after one as Lyon, the NAIA's No. 1 ranked three-point shooting team, made just 1-5 from beyond the arc. At that point, MBU had momentum and they fed off to put forth one of their best periods of the season in the second quarter. They outrebounded the Scots 11-5 and outscored the them 25-13. The upset alert was on as Missouri Baptist took a 40-27 advantage into halftime.
The Spartans knew, however, the highly ranked Scots wouldn't go down easy. The home side all but erased the large deficit late in the third quarter. With three minutes left, Lyon went on a 10-2 run to take the Spartan lead from 12 points to just two.
The Scots would finally retake the lead with eight minutes left in the final period and they would not surrender it the rest of the way. Missouri Baptist fought to the final buzzer but Alissa Rowden's attempt at a game-tying three rimmed out as the clock hit zeros. Lyon held on for a 67-64 win.
Chantelle Smith led the way for MBU with 17 points. Chanel Brown and Briya Wilborn also reached double digits for the Spartans with 11 points apiece. Brown pulled down nine rebounds, just one short of a double-double.
The Spartans are now 10-10 overall and 8-8 in the AMC. Lyon improves to 18-3 overall and 14-2 in the AMC. Missouri Baptist will be back in action on Saturday with a 1 pm tipoff against Central Baptist College.
