SPARTAN SOFTBALL FALLS TO MILLSAPS IN EXTRA INNINGS

ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Softball surrendered a late lead and fell to Millsaps College (Miss.) 5-4 on Friday afternoon in Jackson, Miss.

Millsaps jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead on Spartan starter Baleigh Koester but the freshman settled in and held down the Majors offense for most of the day.

On the other side, the Spartan offense could not solve Millsaps starter Kayla Davidson for the first four innings. They would finally get a rally going in the fifth when Amber Mobbs led off with a single. Ally Gischer then stepped in with two outs and laced a double into the gap. Mobbs scored on the play and the Spartans were back on level terms.

Neither team could break the tie in the sixth nor seventh so the game went to extra innings. With a runner placed on second to start the eighth, Gischer delivered her second RBI of the day with a base hit.

Koester continued into the eighth on the mound for MBU but conceded the tying run on a sacrifice fly, sending the game to a ninth frame.

Missouri Baptist again took advantage of the placed runner. Caitlin McNiff scored on a fielder's choice with Meagan Elder at the plate. Unfortunately the Spartans were once again unable to preserve the lead in the bottom half of the inning. This time, the Majors not only tied the game they went ahead to claim the victory.

The Spartans (1-2) were scheduled to play Austin College (Texas) later in the day but that contest was rained out. MBU will play a doubleheader with Austin and Millsaps again tomorrow starting at noon.
