SPARTANS FALL TO SAINTS IN HOME OPENER

ST. LOUIS—The No. 5 ranked Men's Lacrosse team kicked off their season at home, taking on the (RV) Saints of Siena Heights University. As expected, the match remained neck and neck throughout.

Senior Austin Dahl started things off, scoring the first goal of the match just a couple minutes in. Moments later, Siena Heights tied things up, but freshman Jaxon Haas quickly responded with another goal for MBU (2-1). After a goal from Sean Hess, the Spartans entered the second quarter up by two (3-1).

The start of second quarter remained in the Spartans favor. After a good clear from MBU, Andy Coulter put up a goal, putting them ahead by three. The Saints jumped back into the game, eventually taking the lead, 4-5. Team captains Devin Mayer and Austin Dahl quickly responded, tying things back up, and then putting the Spartans ahead, 6-5.

The third quarter was all MBU, dishing out four goals versus SHU's one. They entered the final quarter with a promising lead (10-6).

It appeared the Spartans had the win in the bag, as it was a slow start to the fourth quarter. However, with six minutes remaining, the Saints began firing back, eventually tying things up at 10, forcing Head Coach Joly to call a timeout. Unfortunately, it was to no avail, as SHU's Shane Lewandowski scored with just seconds left. The Saints took the win by just one goal.

Dahl led the match in the shots, faceoff and groundball categories, finishing with 12, nine and seven, respectively. Robert Ates finished the match with a total of 10 saves.

The Spartans head to Kansas on Friday, March 2 to take on Ottawa University. The match is set for 1 pm (CST).
