ST. LOUIS—[BOX GAME ONE] [BOX GAME TWO] Missouri Baptist Softball moved to 2-2 in the American Midwest Conference after a doubleheader split with Lyon College on Saturday afternoon. The Scots came into the day with a record of 17-3 overall.
After posting 14 runs in game two against Central Baptist College on Friday, the Spartans entered Saturday looking to carry over the momentum. It wasn't to be as Scots ace Nicole Sanders held MBU to one run on five hits in a complete game effort.
Baleigh Koester started for Missouri Baptist and nearly matched Sanders pitch for pitch. The Spartan freshman allowed three runs on three hits for a hard luck 3-1 loss.
MBU's only offense came in the seventh. Koester doubled with one out and pinch runner Reilly Kassay came home on a single from Meagan Elder.
The bats made an appearance again in game two. After falling behind 1-0 in the opening inning, the Spartans scored two in the second and four in the fourth for a 6-1 victory.
Caitlin McNiff put MBU in front with a two-run homer in the second, her first of the season. McNiff struck again in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Lyon brought their game one starter, Nicole Sanders back to the mound. McNiff greeted her this time with a single up the middle to score two. With two on and two out, Delissa Dennison helped her own cause with a single to bring in two more.
Dennison also pitched four solid innings, allowing four hits and one run. Baleigh Koester entered in the fifth and tossed three shutout innings.
The Spartans are now 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the AMC. They'll head to Titusville, Florida for eight games over the spring break beginning Monday.
