ST. LOUIS—[BOX GAME ONE] [BOX GAME TWO] MBU Softball enjoyed another short day in Florida on Wednesday after five inning wins against Iowa Wesleyan and Gallaudet University (DC).
The Spartans started the day against Iowa Wesleyan and posted four runs in the first inning. An RBI double from Caitlin McNiff and two Tigers' errors contributed to the fast start.
After a one-run second, Jordan Corby brought two more home in the third with a double of her own. That was highlight of another four-run inning. It was 9-0 heading into the top of the fifth before the Spartans scored the two runs needed to end the game after five. With runners on first and second, Ally Gischer lifted a fly to left field. The left fielder couldn't come up with it and Reily Kassay and Rachel Galbraith scored on the play to make it 11-0.
Delissa Dennison finished off a two-hit shutout with a clean fifth inning. The sophomore improved to 3-2 on the season.
Game two of the day was more of the same as the Spartans put up 12 runs in five innings against Gallaudet University.
The first two frames were clean before Reily Kassay led off the third with a single. Ally Gischer followed suit with another single and Jordan Corby reached on an error from the shortstop. Kassay scored on the play.
The Spartans would do most of their damage in the fourth and fifth innings. Caitlin McNiff started the fourth with a double and came in on a Sarah Langdon single. MBU added three more on RBIs from Kassay, Gischer, and Corby.
MBU went on to post seven in the fifth frame to push the lead to 12-0. McNiff tripled with one out and came across on Megan Mollet single. After Mollet scored on an error, Rachel Galbraith drove in Sarah Langdon from first on a double. Galbraith scored on a single from Kassay. Erica Hixson drove in the final run of the day with a one-out single.
Baleigh Koester put a cap on near perfect pitching day for Missouri Baptist. The freshman spun a one-hit shutout to move her record to 5-3.
Reily Kassay finished the day 5-6 with six runs scored to lead the offense. She also drove in two as did Jordan Corby and Rachel Galbraith. Ally Gischer finished the day 3-5 with a team-leading three RBIs. Caitlin McNiff was 3-6 with two doubles and a triple.
The Spartans improve to 9-6 on the season. They'll continue their Florida trip with two more games against Iowa Wesleyan and Marywood University on Thursday beginning at 8 am CST.
