ST. LOUIS—[BOX GAME ONE] [BOX GAME TWO] MBU Softball dispatched Iowa Wesleyan 8-0 and then snuck by Marywood University 2-1 on Thursday afternoon in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
Caitlin McNiff got the offense going in game one against Iowa Wesleyan. The sophomore's fourth home run of the year made it 1-0 in the first inning.
The Spartans put up four in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Sarah Langdon and a single from Reily Kassay that brought Langdon home. Jordan Corby singled home Kassay and Galbraith in the fourth and Miranda Brown capped off the scoring with a home run in the fifth.
Delissa Dennison allowed just one hit in five innings to earn the shutout. She struck out a career-high 13 and walked just one.
After several lopsided scores over the course of the week, game two of the day was a little too close for comfort for Missouri Baptist.
Marywood pitcher Katie Siano held the MBU offense in check for the first three innings, allowing three hits but no damage. The Pacers would draw first blood in the fourth against Spartan starter Baleigh Koester. After a walk, an error, and a bunt, Annie Heyen delivered an RBI single to put Marywood up 1-0.
MBU finally got it going in the fifth. Reily Kassay reached on an error and stole second. She then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Ally Gischer to tie the game. Gischer would later come around to score on sacrifice fly from Jordan Corby.
Koester took it from there. The freshman allowed one hit in the final two innings to lock down the win. She struck out seven and walked one to improve her record to 6-3.
The Spartans improved to 11-6 overall with their fourth straight win. They'll close out their Florida trip with two more games against Marywood on Friday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 8 am CST.
