ST. LOUIS—[BOX GAME 1] [BOX GAME 2] MBU Softball rolled through Stephens College on Wednesday with 16-0 and 9-0 victories.
The first inning of the day proved to be a precursor of what was to come for the home side Stars. The Spartans came out of the gates with four runs. RBIs from Meghan Mollet and Baleigh Koester made it 2-0. Meagan Elder stepped in with one on and two out and launched her second home run of the season to deep left centerfield.
MBU added five more in the second. Caitlin McNiff, the reigning NAIA National Player of the Week, brought two home with a double to right center. With two on and two out, Meagan Elder then blasted her second long ball in as many innings to make it 9-0.
The Spartans put it on cruise control from there, adding two in the third, three in the fourth, and two more in the fifth for a 16-0 final. Baleigh Koester and Ally Dunaway split the pitching duties. Koester earned the win with three shutout innings.
Game two didn't get off to the same first inning start but the runs eventually came across. This time, it was a six-run sixth that did the damage. A two-run home run from Baleigh Koester put the Spartans on the board first. Jordan Corby would later double to knock in two more. Miranda Brown and Caitlin McNiff earned the other two RBIs in the inning. McNiff struck again in the fourth with a two-run blast of her own. It was her team-leading seventh of the season.
The big story of game two, however, was the pitching. Baleigh Koester and Ally Dunaway combined for a five-inning no-hitter. The last MBU no-hitter (of any duration) was April 26, 2010 when Jessica Robinson shut down Principia for six innings.
The Spartans are now 15-6 overall and 4-2 in the AMC. They will play at home for the first time in 2018 when they welcome St. Mary of the Woods College to Spartan Field on Thursday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 pm.
