ST. LOUIS—[BOX GAME 1] [BOX GAME 2] MBU Softball saw its eight game winning streak come to an end on Thursday but salvaged a split with a 2-1 win over St. Mary of the Woods in game two.
On a cold, rainy afternoon for a home opener, the Spartan offense struggled to heat up in game one. SMWC scored two in the first and two more in third against MBU starter Baleigh Koester. They added one more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans finally generated a rally in the sixth. Ally Gischer and Meghan Mollet started the inning with back to back singles. Jordan Corby walked to load the bases. Caitlin McNiff and Koester were retired to bring up Meagan Elder with two outs. The Spartan catcher promptly cleared the bases with a grand slam and put Missouri Baptist right back in it at 5-4.
The comeback would fall short, however. The Spartans were retired in order in the seventh.
The offense was again hard to come by in game two but MBU starter Ally Dunaway put forth one of her best performances of the season to keep the Pomeroys in check. The freshman delivered a complete game, allowing just six hits and one earned run.
The bats scraped together just enough to earn a 2-1 victory. It was tied in the third when Meagan Elder came up with another clutch hit. This time, she delivered an RBI single to score Caitlin McNiff.
The Spartans are now 16-7 overall. They resume AMC play at home on Friday at 11 am against Hannibal-LaGrange.
