ST. LOUIS—[BOX GAME ONE] [BOX GAME TWO] Missouri Baptist Softball split another doubleheader on Friday, this time with Central Baptist College. The big story of the day, however, may have been the awakening of the offense in a 14-7 victory in game two.
The Spartans got off to a slow start in game one as Central Baptist starter Kymberlie House retired the first eight. Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, back to back doubles from Amber Mobbs and Jordan Corby finally put MBU on the board.
That would be all Missouri Baptist could muster, however. The Mustangs added one in the fifth and one in the sixth on Spartan starter Baleigh Koester. The home side held on for a 4-1 win.
The Spartan bats finally awoke in the second game. It started with a four run first inning. It was already 1-0 when Meagan Elder doubled to right center to plate two more. Meghan Mollet would later score on an error to top off a wild four run first frame.
After CBC responded with six in the bottom half, the Spartans were left wondering what went wrong. Jordan Corby answered in the second with a two-run homer to tie it up. Things got even sweeter in the third. Five hits led to four runs and a 10-6 advantage. Missouri Baptist would add three more in the fifth.
Ally Dunaway and Baleigh Koester combined for six and two-thirds in relief, allowing four runs between them. It proved to be plenty for the offense as the Spartans finished with 14 runs, just one short of their season total from the previous six games combined.
Six Spartans had at least two hits, led by Meagan Elder who finished 4-5 with three RBIs. Jordan Corby finished with three batted in while Ally Gischer was close behind with two RBIs.
Missouri Baptist is now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in AMC play. They will take on Lyon College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for noon in Batesville.
