ST. LOUIS—[BOX GAME 1] [BOX GAME 2] MBU Softball dropped both games of a doubleheader against Culver-Stockton on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field. The Wildcats took game one 11-6 and game two 7-2 to complete the sweep.
After a quiet first and second inning for both sides, the Spartans struck for three runs in the third inning of game one. A single from Jordan Corby plated Rachel Galbraith to open the scoring. Meagan Elder then hit a ground ball to short that was booted by the Culver shortstop. Two runs scored on the play and the home side looked to be off and running.
The Wildcats, however, didn't wait long to respond. They posted a crooked number in the top of the fourth inning to break the game open. Five hits, including a two run homer and a triple, combined with a Spartan error led to seven runs and a four-run lead for the visitors.
Three more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth on Spartan starter Baleigh Koester proved too much to overcome for Missouri Baptist. They would cut into the deficit with a run in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings but Culver held on for an 11-6 victory.
Game two was a similar story as the Wildcats never trailed in route to a five-run win. Home runs by Cassie Burris in the third and Avery Johnson in the fifth accounted for four of the seven runs charged to MBU starter Ally Dunaway.
The Spartans scored one in the fourth on an RBI double by Sarah Langdon and another in the fifth on a similar double by Caitlin McNiff.
Missouri Baptist is now 24-11 overall. They'll continue non-conference play on Friday against Crowley's Ridge (Ark.). First pitch at the Spartan Softball Field is scheduled for 1Â pm.
