OWENSBORO, KY. – Missouri Baptist Men's Soccer snapped a four game winless (and scoreless) streak with a 1-0 double overtime win on Saturday night.
Cullen Barr netted his second game-winning goal of the season as the Spartans knocked off Brescia University (Ky.).
With a new-look starting lineup in place, MBU had the better of the play in the first half but the scoring troubles of the previous four games persisted. Chances from
Jona Oesterling and
Richie Taylor were denied at the offensive end. The Bearcats, meanwhile, managed two shot attempts but neither forced a save from goalkeeper
Davide Bucarelli.
The second half was ripe with opportunities for both sides. The teams traded chances back and forth with Bucarelli coming up with four saves and Brescia keeper Jacob Stanley stopping three shots. Overtime was necessary.
Four minutes into the second sudden death period,
Jona Oesterling played a perfect cross into the Bearcat penalty area.
Cullen Barr was able to get a foot on it to tip it past Stanley for the game-winning goal.
"What a hard-fought win," noted MBU Head Coach
Jake Alvernia. "I thought Brescia's counter-attack today was fantastic but we were able to hold their quality chances to a minimum."
After creating several chances throughout the match and then providing the game-winning assist, Oesterling earned 'Man of the Match' recognition.
The Spartans are now back over .500 at 4-3-1 overall. They resume AMC play on Tuesday at home against Williams Baptist University (Ark.). Kickoff at Spartan Field is set for 1 pm.
