ST. LOUIS—Missouri Baptist women's soccer trailed Harris-Stowe 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field before two late goals swung the pendulum in their favor. The Spartans stayed unbeaten in the AMC with a record now at 4-0-1.
After a sluggish first 45 minutes for both sides, the Hornets scored the opening goal less than a minute into the second half. That would turn out to be the turning point of the match though as the goal seemed to light a fire under the Missouri Baptist offensive attack. The Spartans controlled possession from that point forward, generating the majority of the scoring chances.
Missouri Baptist had a golden opportunity to tie it in the 54
th minute.
Alexis Ramey was taken down in the box and the Spartans were awarded a penalty.
Danielle Wilde stepped forward to take it but was denied by a diving save from Hornets' keeper Camila Chaves.
Despite the setback, MBU would eventually breakthrough with the equalizer in the 75
th minute.
Brianna Merchant played a ball to
Riley Janvrin near the Harris-Stowe penalty area. Janvrin maneuvered to her right, cut back left, and found enough space to get a powerful shot off. Chaves had no chance and watched as Janvrin's rocket found the top corner to tie the game.
The Spartans kept the pressure on and less than 10 minutes after Janvrin's equalizer,
Casey Gutting drew a foul a few yards from the Harris-Stowe penalty area. The junior would take the resulting free kick and crafted a perfect strike that ricocheted off the underside of the cross bar and over the goal line. Chaves, once again, had very little chance of making the save.
Gutting's fifth goal of the year held up as the game-winner after Harris-Stowe could not mount an attack in the final five minutes.
Jemica Artillaga and
Brooklynn Hamman once again split time in goal for Missouri Baptist. Artillaga made three saves in the first half before giving way to Hamman after the break.
After starting the season 0-4, Missouri Baptist has fought its way back to .500 at 4-4-2 overall. The Spartans also continue to push the AMC's leaders at 4-0-1 in conference play. They'll look to make it five straight victories on Saturday when they travel to Lyon College. Start time in Batesville is set for 11 am.
