SPARTANS TOPPLE REIGNING NATIONAL CHAMPS IN FIVE SETS

ST. LOUIS—The Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball team hosted reigning NAIA National Champions Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) on Saturday. After an intense five-sets, the Spartans prevailed over Blue Raiders.

The Blue Raiders jumped to a quick four-point lead in the first set. The Spartans eventually put themselves on the board but fell just short of catching up, as LWC claimed set one, 25-22. MBU regrouped for set two, as they took a quick lead this time around. The Spartans led by 10 points (24-14) when a service error sparked a five-point run (19-24) for Lindsey Wilson. However, it was to no avail as a kill from Mallory Moran gave MBU set two.

It looked like Missouri Baptist would take set three, as they stayed ahead throughout, but multiple Spartan errors gave LWC a fighting chance (18-23). They managed to slide past MBU, taking the third set, 25-23.

Set four proved to be an even match while the top-ranked teams battled it out. The Spartans and Blue Raiders traded possession throughout, but a kill from Kristen Williams sealed set four for MBU, pushing the match to a tiebreaker.

The Spartans hit the court for set five with adrenaline running high, while the Blue Raiders seemed to be losing momentum. Lindsey Wilson tried to keep up, but MBU proved to be too much, as they went on to defeat the No. 4 ranked team.

Setter Megan Huffman led the way for the Spartans, dishing out 56 assists, while also contributing 14 digs.

On the defensive end, Rachel Luebbers led in the digs category with a total of 17, while Caterina Cigarini finished with five blocks.

Outside hitter Maggie Sorensen finished the day with a total of 21 kills (.395 hitting percentage), with Cigarini and Moran following right behind with 14.

With this win, the Spartans advance to an overall record of 19-2, pushing their win streak to 18. MBU travels to Columbia, Mo. on Monday to take on AMC opponent Stephens College at 7 p.m.
