ST. LOUIS—Freshman
Miranda Pratt scored her first goal as a Spartan to guide MBU women's soccer to a 1-1 draw with Culver-Stockton on Saturday at Spartan Field.
The Spartans entered the day looking for their first win of 2018 and mired in a goal drought that stretched back to the season opener. The early portion of Saturday's contest didn't provide much excitement for either side but that all changed as the first half neared an end.
In the 32
nd minute,
Allie Heinz sent a long ball toward Culver's penalty area. Miscommunication from the Wildcats led to the ball going through the legs of the Culver goalkeeper and straight into the path of MBU forward
Miranda Pratt. The freshman had a wide open goal and provided an easy finish to give Missouri Baptist a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The Spartans tightened up on defense to start the second half but Culver managed to tie things up in the 53
rd minute on a goal very few goalkeepers in the NAIA would have saved. Freshman Jody Ellis whipped a cross into the MBU penalty area and Francesa Frasca went up over everyone to deliver a powerful header past goalkeeper
Jemica Artillaga.
The teams would trade chances through the next 30 minutes of regulation and into two sudden death overtime periods but neither side could find the winner. The game finished 1-1.
The final shot count was 22-11 in favor of Culver-Stockton. Artillaga finished the day with four saves before giving way to
Brooklynn Hamman for the final 40 minutes. Hamman stopped three shots.
Missouri Baptist (0-4-1) will now look ahead to AMC play on Tuesday at William Woods. Kickoff in Fulton is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
