SPARTANS CRUISE TO VICTORY IN HOME OPENER

ST. LOUIS—Men's volleyball hosted the Tigers of Campbellsville University (Ky.) on Saturday evening. After a few sets of back and forth, the Spartans pulled away, coming out with their first 2019 win at the Petty SRC.

The first set started off with multiple errors coming from both sides of the court. Tied at three apiece, the Spartans began to pull away (8-3), prompting a CU timeout. The strategic timeout worked to their advantage as they immediately regained possession, however, opposite hitter Miljan Kastratovic answered back with a kill from the back row. The Tigers would eventually gain on them, but MBU managed to stay ahead for the remainder of the set. A kill from Cameron Hibbler gave the Spartans set one, 25-21.

Set two proved to be anybody's game as the teams went point for point, once again. They found themselves tied 24 times in set two alone. At 22-22, CU's Rafael Cruz would dish out three consecutive kills to give the Tigers set two, 25-23.

Missouri Baptist quickly took control in set three, prompting another early timeout from the Tigers (8-3). They did manage to immediately get the ball back, sparking a CU run. Outside hitter Luka Cajic stopped the Tigers, dishing out kills to keep MBU ahead (12-8). The Spartan offense would be too much for the Tigers, giving them set three, 25-17.

The fourth set was all MBU, as they came out to a quick eight-point lead. Errors continued to plague Campbellsville, allowing the Spartans to stay comfortably ahead. They cruised to the final set win, 25-9.

Luka Cajic led the match with 14 kills on an impressive .458 attack percentage. Kastratovic followed closely behind, finishing with 10 total (.286 attack percentage).

Cameron Hibbler and Skyler Capllonch led the defensive effort, putting up four blocks and 15 digs, respectively. Setter Jason Harman finished the evening with a total of 41 assists.

The Spartans head to Lindenwood University-Belleville on Monday, January 21. They'll take on their first conference opponent of the season at 7 p.m.
