ST.LOUIS—Missouri Baptist Women's Soccer used four second half goals to knock off Lyon College (Ark.) (5-7, 2-5 AMC) on Saturday afternoon at Maryville Field. The Spartans earned consecutive victories for the first time in 2019.
After a 6-0 victory one week to the day over CBC, the Spartans picked up where they off on Saturday against the visiting Scots. Despite being outshot in the opening half, MBU controlled possession and nearly took the lead on more than one occasion.
They would continue to outplay Lyon into the second half and the breakthrough finally arrived in the 52
nd minute.
Allie Heinz drew a foul just outside the penalty area leading to a free kick for
Madi Dunahue. The freshman delivered a perfectly placed strike to the top corner for her first career goal, giving the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
That opened the floodgates and Missouri Baptist would double the lead 12 minutes later. Off a corner from
Maddie Mrazik,
Gianna Gore poked home a loose ball for her third of the year.
Dunahue score her second of the game off yet another set piece in the 69
th minute before Mrazik completed the scoring less than a minute later off a well-placed pass to the back post by
Miranda Pratt. The Spartans outshot the Scots 9-3 in the second half.
Jemica Artillaga made seven saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season.
With the victory, Missouri Baptist (3-2-1 AMC) maintained its position in the top six of the conference standings with fifth-place Park and third-place Lindenwood-Belleville still set to meet on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans will have an opportunity to make it three straight wins when they travel to Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
