COLUMBIA, Mo. – The top-ranked Missouri Baptist University women's volleyball team earned its sixth consecutive victory and sweep to cap off the Columbia College Fall Classic on Saturday. The Spartans defeated Wiley College by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 to finish the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.
Leading the team in scoring for the seventh match in a row, junior outside hitter
Isidora Stojovic was rewarded at the end of the tourney with a 2019 CC Fall Classic All-Classic Team distinction. Stojovic, who averaged 4.6 kills per set which was second among all tournament players, wasn't the only Spartan to shine. Middle blocker
Marina Sanches was also voted onto the All-Classic Team by the tournament coaches.
Additionally,
Katie Duncan (.396) and
Giovanna Tapigliani (.390) ranked 1-2 in hitting percentage for the tournament,
Morgan Berry led all players with 0.9 service aces per set, and
Caterina Cigarini and
Raylyn Dodd packed the 1-2 punch in blocks with 1.7 and 1.3 blocks per set, respectively.
Reigning AMC Attacker of the Week
Isidora Stojovic got Missouri Baptist off on the right foot putting down half of her 14 kills in the first set. The Spartans also logged their best set defensively by limiting Wiley to five kills on 34 swings for a -.059 hitting percentage.
It was a bit of a rollercoaster ride for MBU in Set No. 2. The Spartans seemed to be in complete control with a sizable eight-point lead, but the Wildcats clawed back to even the score at 18-all. MBU's
Brilee Henson delivered a crucial kill to halt Wiley's momentum and begin a five-point swing in favor of the Spartans. MoBap held off the Wildcats, 25-21.
The third set was tightly contested up until the midway point. Following 10 different ties with the last one coming at the 13-13 mark, Missouri Baptist pulled away in quick fashion. The Spartans scored in 13 of the last 15 rallies behind stellar performances from
Katie Duncan and
Marina Sanches. Duncan had five kills and a service ace during the late run, while Sanches recorded two kills, two blocks (1 S, 1 A) and two assists.
As a team, the Spartans hit above .350 for the third match in a row, while holding a 10-4 advantage in blocks and 9-4 advantage in service aces over the Wildcats.
Katie Duncan, who caught fire in the third set, registered her seventh 10+ kill performance with 10 kills and no errors. The junior from Imperial, Mo. hit lights-out with a .526 hitting percentage and 7 digs.

Ariana Macies, who was as sure-handed as they get with 4.66 digs per set and a perfect reception percentage,
Morgan Berry, who had 24 assists and a match-high 4 service aces, and the entire middle-blocking crew. Between
Caterina Cigarini,
Marina Sanches and
Raylyn Dodd, the middles teamed up for 4 solo blocks and 9 assisted blocks.
No. 1-ranked Missouri Baptist (24-4, 6-1 AMC) will return to Columbia two days from now when they jump back into conference play at Stephens College (3-18, 0-7 AMC). First serve against the Stars is set for 6 p.m.
