ST. LOUIS—The undefeated Spartans continued conference play, hosting Morningside (Iowa) and Dordt (Iowa) on Friday afternoon. Missouri Baptist cruised to 21-0 (9-0), defeating each team in three sets.
Outside hitter
Steven Rodriguez had an impressive performance against the Morningside Mustangs. The senior led the match in kills, clocking out at 17 total (.667 attack percentage). He also put down five service aces.
MBU rolled out to a quick lead in set one, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the first half. Spartan errors, however, allowed the Mustangs to come back and tie things up at 19-19. From there, untimely errors from Morningside would grant MBU possession, allowing them to take the first, 25-21.
The second set was a slow start for MBU, as errors kept the score tight, once again. Tied at 7-7, the Spartans managed to find their groove. Three kills and two service aces from Rodriguez would put the Spartans ahead by five (13-8), prompting a Morningside timeout. Out of the break, MBU maintained momentum and continued to push their lead. They'd take set two, 25-16.
The game of back and forth continued into the fourth set, with the Spartans staying just a step ahead. The teams went point for point throughout, but the MBU offense proved to be too much, as they took set three, 25-21.
Missouri Baptist took another quick lead in the second match of the day. They cruised to a 10-point lead before Dordt began to fire back (15-5). The Defenders tried for a comeback late in the set, but it was to no avail. The Spartans claimed set one, 25-16.
Sets two and three were each swift starts for the Spartans as they continued to dominate at the net and service line. Dordt attempted to rally back in each, but not in enough time to catch MBU. The Spartans cruised to victory, taking their second sweep of the day (25-18, 25-18).
Miljan Kastratovic put down a total of 13 kills (.524 attack percentage) to lead the match. Rodriguez followed just behind, finishing with 12 (.476 attack percentage).
Jack Huizinga led MBU with five digs total. The opposite hitter also earned a total of nine kills.
