ST. LOUIS— MBU Men's Soccer was lapped in a 6-2 defeat to Judson University (Ill.) on Monday afternoon at CBC Field. The Spartans are now 1-1 on the young season.
The Eagles stormed out of the starting gate with three goals in the first 17 minutes, two of which came off of free kicks. The Spartans would eventually settle in and control the ball for the latter half of the opening 45.
In the 35
th minute,
Chase Droege was pulled down in the Judson box leading to a PK for
Mattia Giangrande. The graduate transfer pulled one back for the Spartans with a well-placed spot kick.
Just minutes later, Droege found himself in the middle of the action again. A free-kick from midfield by
Nico Tossici appeared to have glanced off Droege and past Judson keeper Jacob Collins. The officials initially signaled a good goal for MBU before a discussion reversed the call, claiming Droege knocked the ball in with his hand. The Spartans went into the half down 3-1.
Neither side could mount much of an attack in the early going of the second half but that changed in the final 15 minutes. Diego Silva notched his second goal of the game for Judson in the 78
th minute before
Cullen Barr responded for MBU just two minutes later off an assist from
Antonio Bussu.
The Eagles would then erase any hope of a comeback with two more goals, one in the 83
rd and another in the 88
th. Silva was the 'Man of the Match' for Judson with two goals and an assist. Nico Mihalopoulos also registered twice for the visitors.
The Spartans will now venture out for their first road trip of the season. They'll head to Michigan for matchups against Rochester College (8/30) and Concordia- Ann Arbor (9/2) over Labor Day weekend.
